Electroless nickel plating: white marks
Q. Hi.
I'm Al from Indonesia, I have problem with my mid-phosphorus EN plating. My part has white mark can't be removed. My suspect is from chemical EN. I'm already controlling nickel and reducer within spec. Usually I did for production. but now suddenly my parts have white mark. Please help me to find root cause.

A. Hi Al
Please send photos to mooney@finishing.com for posting here. "White mark" is too vague for replies that won't be misleading. To illustrate this, searching the site for 'electroless nickel white mark' instantly brought up at least four different types of white marks and possible causes:
• Thread 12022, "Residue on electroless nickel parts after drying".
• Thread 37630, "White stains in electroless nickel plating".
• Thread 43950, "White rust on electroless nickel plated parts".
• Thread 58427, "Water spots on electroless nickel plated parts".
If you are using a proprietary system you should contact the supplier; if this is a home-brew, it is certainly possible that it was mixed wrong, or became contaminated, etc. But good photos would be a first step whereby readers could at least say: "That's not white rust" or "That's not water stains" or "Those are pits, not stains", etc. Thanks!
Luck & Regards,
