What is "Finishing" or "Metal Finishing"?
Finishing is a critical sustainability tool!
Metal has been vital to civilization for millennia, yet countless billions of $$ of our modern world of metal simply corrodes away every year -- necessitating an endless cycle of wasteful re-mining of ores, smelting processes, rolling/casting, fabrication, assembly, packaging materials, selling, and ultimately landfilling, with transportation cost & energy between each step. Why? Because things are often lasting 3 or 4 years when they can so easily last 3 or 4 decades and more!Corrosion can be controlled by proper anodizing, electroplating, galvanizing, or powder coating
It's not just the money: it's the environmental consequences, the loss of functionality, the injuries, the ugliness, the heirlooms lost, the acreage wasted on landfills, the accidents in transport.Finishing is about creating a surface/skin with the properties you need
And finishing is not just corrosion protection either, it's low friction for energy efficiency; low electrical resistance to enable complex electronics; control of microbial contamination which spreads disease; wear resistance so engines & transmissions last a lifetime and need fewer repairs; cleanable surfaces for hygiene; aesthetic appearance ... and so much more. And on a lighter note ...
