Surviving in electroplating business in this market

-----
October 28, 2010

Hi all

I'm in this plating line for 3 years and have a question for my own development.

In today's situation the cost of zinc metal, chemicals, machinery, and acids has gone very high; and the biggest task is manpower and power constraints; how to overcome them in this competitive market where customers are looking for cost reductions each year.
And the quality expectation are very high.

Everything depends on the mind, but in a manufacturing unit no specified chemical specialist has been appointed as Quality Person.

Suggest a systematic way to overcome these problems.

Hi, Deepan. There is but one way for a business to survive, of course, and that is to sell enough at a high enough margin. Let's ignore the sales techniques themselves because they are off topic, and I'm no good at it anyway -- which leaves me able to say only that you need a better product at a lower cost than your competition. But the crux of the question then is "who is your competition?" If you say that it's other local platers, you'll certainly not learn anything here that they are not also learning, so it's a zero-sum game.

But if you view your competition as being alternate technologies for building the components, and plating shops from other areas, then you can work with organizations like the Metal Finishers Association of India towards increasing the size of the pie that you must share with the other local plating shops.

Quality assurance is vital, of course, because the cost of extensive rework and rejects is more than any company can bear. There are countless books about quality but we can't cover so general a subject in a few paragraph response. Good luck.
