What shot for blasting stainless and high tensile steel used in railway coaches?
Q. I am an Engineer in a rail coach building industry in India. before painting we are blasting the coaches with steel shots. now we have to blast the coaches made of stainless steel sheets.
I want to to know is any shots or other medium available suitable to blast the coaches made of high tensile steel and stainless steel.
if we can use the existing shot blasting plant, what are the modification needed to be done on the machine viz., screw conveyor, wheels, etc
we are in need of blasting medium which is eco-friendly, recyclable one.

A. I do not think you want to use steel to blast SS. If you do, you are aware that in time it will appear as if the SS will develop rust spots from CS shot. You can use a number of other materials; however, your surface appearance will also change. Probably the closest you can come to the finish you are getting now, other than SS shot would be with glass bead media.

A. Any non-ferrous shot material is fine for blasting stainless and will of course work for the carbon steel as well. However, you do not want to use the shot on carbon steel and then use that same shot on stainless. Keep your shot segregated between that used for your carbon steel and that used for your stainless steel.

Hi Deependra. What are these shells and wagons made of? Are they the same stainless steel (what grade) and high tensile steel (what grade) that Sri uses? Why are you blasting them -- to remove graffiti, to repaint? Thanks. The more info you can give about your situation the more helpful the responses will probably be.
