Chrome plating for Hot Rod Restoration

Hi,

I am currently restoring my first classic car, 1952 Mercury. Since the monetary requirements are a bit too much for me right now, I have been looking at ways to refinish parts myself. I was told by a co-worker that there are re-chroming kits available to do small parts at home. I have been searching and have not been able to find anything. I was wondering if I am wasting my time? Sorry if this is a duplicate info request, you seriously have tons of stuff on this site. Thanks for your time.

Hi, Ted. Please start with our Introduction to Chrome Plating, and ask any questions you wish. It's one thing to gold plate an auto emblem -- relying upon the very high quality OEM electroplating that is already on it, so all you need to do is add a few millionths of an inch of gold onto something that is already reflective, perfect, and protected from corrosion -- it's quite another thing to take large, rusty, pitted parts and do the repair work, mush buffing, and apply the numerous layers of copper, nickel, and chrome that are required. Good luck.
