Teflon coating onto BOLTS and NUTS
Q. 1. We use SS316 bolts for fastening the parts, these parts are dipped in chemicals. Due to chemical reaction these bolts are eaten away. Will teflon coating the bolt & nut withstand? What I mean to say is will the teflon last while tightening nut & bolt?
2. Is there any other material which can withstand corrosive effect of caustic?

A. Dear Sir,
PTFE (Teflon/Xylan/Delta/Dyflon/Greblon) can be applied on fasteners by spray and dip spin coating application techniques. Those coatings are suitable for Frictionless and anti corrosive applications specially suitable for marine environmental applications like offshore plants and petroleum plants. PTFE or other fluoropolymer based coating is suitable for friction approx. 0.02, it will not work for automobile applications. Automobile fasteners required friction more than 0.07. If you applied PTFE on Automobile then it will get off during vibration test, be of dry film and waxy characteristics of PTFE. PTFE will give you resistance for most of the chemicals and acids, alkalies, etc.
In other hand you can apply Aluminium+Zinc flake primers and PTFE fluoropolymer based top coats. The process can be done by dip spin technique for small fasteners and by spraying for large fasteners. Contact Doerken of Germeny for those coatings or other PTFE coaters in your locality or to Dupont.
You have not mentioned your testing specification, therefore it's difficult to suggest perfect coating systems. Above coating systems might solve your problem.

RFQ: I would like to know whether PTFE coating is possible through DIP SPIN processes? If so, then can you explain what will be the right RPM for coating? Also give me name of some companies who are manufacturing this type of machine. I am a fastener manufacture. I want to avoid the spraying process for the same. Pleases give a solution.

RFQ: Dear Sirs,
I'm looking for coating machine for Bolt & Nut. My friend is a manufacturer of Bolt& Nut in Thailand. However, many clients request the products with PTFE coating. Hence, we're trying to source the machine in order to fulfill clients requirement instead of import from overseas. Please help to advice if there is any machine you can provide or just give us further information about this application.
Thanks and best regards,
Alan

A. Hi Jay. Excellent question. I think there is no answer today, but it does suggest a new idea for a web-based business. Something like Thomas Register, but not just general information in the categories, but an actual live feed of data on what is in stock.
