Want One-step Iron Phosphate

Q. I'm looking for a one-step iron phosphatizing chemical. It has to clean and phosphatize steel that may have a bit of rust on it. Am I looking for the impossible?

A. Hi, Dale. I don't think a robust 1-step iron phosphatize is possible.

People often use a 3-step iron phosphate for practical reasons even if not as good as the 7-step zinc phosphate -- just as they often eat 3-course dinners rather than a more satisfying 7-course one. But I think 3 steps is the realistic minimum, and trying to combine an alkaline-based degreaser with an acid-based rust remover, with a properly balanced iron phosphate step is a bit like trying to use the clam chowder as the gravy for the meat loaf and substituting a scoop of strawberry ice cream for the mashed potatoes :-)

thumbs up sign Hi, KY Chek.

I'm sure we will be able to help you locate alternate brands of phosphating chemicals if you wish; hopefully our advertisers are already reaching out to you. But this forum is made possible by our supporting advertisers and we really can't ask them to bear the costs of maintaining distributorship information for their competitors' products on these pages :-)
