Acid etched on Nickel From 1901?

I'm a self employed contractor & have been hired to restore a walk-in vault door from 1901 for my costumer, while inspecting the door I found out that all of the locking hardware is nickel plated and was etched with detail (not like what is on a gun ) what looks like a sign painter would have put on, (I'm not referring to the painted parts ) I had no luck contracting shops on how to duplicate the detail ( one thought was to glass bead before or after nickel plating ) If you use a rust remover it removes the rust and etching but if you use automotive compound the etching is revealed but in bad shape, I talked with a sign shop that said they would be able to digitally photograph and clean up to get a decal made up to then try to etch, any info would be great

Thanks
