Post-Chromating Fabrication
2004
I am Morris L. Hamilton, QA & Eng. Mgr. at precision sheet metal job shop located in the Atlanta, GA, area, serving several high tech customers. We are having severe problems forming parts that have been yellow chromated. Specifically, the desired formed angles cannot be maintained consistently.
Two questions:
1) What is chromating doing to the metal to cause the problem?
2) Is there any way to modify the chromate process to eliminate or mitigate the problem.

This is strange. Are you talking about aluminum parts or steel parts?

Your posting does not include why you think that the chromating makes any difference. The chromate is not a millionth of an inch thick, so how can it affect your product?
