Q. Please advise, what is and where may retail availability of ELECTROPHORETIC LACQUER be found for the purpose of plating organic materials with gold or silver solution. Thank you.

A. Hi, Jamie

To my knowledge electrophoretic lacquer is not available retail because consumers would not have the equipment to apply it -- it's not something you spray on or brush on; rather it must be applied with electricity in an electrophoretic lacquering tank -- which is a rather complex industrial device with membranes, ion exchange, etc.

However, let me explain it because it sounds like there might be a misunderstanding. As implied by Nimesh, it is often a clear protective lacquer which is applied to extend the life of things like the thin gold plating on costume jewelry. But it can also be dyed, and some people use dyed electrophoretic lacquer for decorative effects on jewelry.

Small jewelry designers, for practicality, often opt for UV cured lacquers instead. These are nail polish like lacquers that are hardened with UV light -- pretty much the same stuff that is used in Nail Salons. I'm not familiar with whether a realistic looking gold nail polish style UV-curable lacquer is available or not. Good luck.

Q. I am currently using dye lacquer gold, but with that I am only able to plate the product gold. I want certain parts of the under layer (silver) to be left as is, i.e., two-tone effect. Could you please advice me on how to do this?

Thanks

A. Semantics, you are painting the part, not plating it.

The solution is simple, but may have a few problems. Mask off the part that you want to remain silver with tape or a conforming mask, then paint. Remove the tape before the paint completely dries, or you may get ragged edges of the paint.
Your vendor should be able to help you. It should be important to them as if you have problems you just might find another vendor that is willing to help.

Very High Temperature Electrophoretic Lacquer?

Q. Does anyone know of a VHT lacquer that can be applied in the electroplating process? The lacquer would need to withstand and protect the plating up to 400 °F. Thanks.
