What is CRCA steel?
< Prev. page (You're on the last page of this topic)
Q. Sir,
We have recently purchased the river gauge scale to know the level of water in the reservoir. The supplier said that the gauge will be CRCA sheet. Without going into the nitty gritty, we bought the scale. Will the CRCA sheet be suitable since it will be immersed in the reservoir for 365 days in a year
Thanks,
Sam

A. Hi Samuel. CRCA is plain, extremely rust-prone, carbon steel. If it is actually unfinished plain steel, I can't see how it can last anywhere, let alone partially immersed. I suspect that it is plated, painted, powder coated, or finished in some manner. How suitable it will be will depend upon that finish. Good luck.

Q. What is CRCS Meaning in Sheet metal drawing? What is CRCS abbreviation?
G.HARIHARAN GOPALAN- Coimbatore,Tamil Nadu, India
A. Hi G.Hariharan. "Cold rolled carbon steel" is as good a guess as any. But as I've said and implied a few times already, I think it's foolish to guess what you customer wants based on acronyms he makes up rather than seeking clarification. Best of luck.

Q. I wish to know which is more resistant to drilling a hole with a drill machine -- MS or CRCA ?

A. Hi cousin Ajay. Please explain what the terms "MS" and "CRCA" mean to you because the first Q&A on this page explains that the two terms don't necessarily imply any difference at all. How could the same thing have different properties?

Q. CRCA is mostly useful in forming, as we know by increasing the thickness of sheet material we can minimize forming defects. Still in company professional peoples are not doing so. Can I know the reason behind it?

How to remove rust from CRCA strip?
Q. Hello Sir,
How to remove rust on cold rolled close annealed strip?
We have a lot of raw material stock with rust.
How to overcome the problem. Kindly provide the solutions.

A. Hi Raghavi. You can dip it in inhibited HCl. Phosphoric acid is another route. Or HCl followed by phosphoric. Or you can sandblast the rust off, which is probably best if it's practical. Good luck.
But steel rusts, so there's no point in removing the rust and expecting it to simply stay rust free afterwards. My question is: what are you going to try to use this rusty steel for, what operations does the rust interfere with, and how do you intend to rust-proof it once the rust has been removed? The readers can apply their expertise towards trying to help you solve a very specific problem, but to do that we need those specifics, for example:
What theory prevails for why this particular batch of steel got rusted? Are you sure it's salvageable once the rust is removed (not deeply pitted, nor under gauge). Once the rust if off, what's the next step you intend to do? Do the components made from this steel ultimately get phosphatized, e-coated, painted, powder coated, plated, or what? Please get back to us. Thanks!

Q. Dear Sir,
I have a doubt with CRCA AND HR sheets. I am working in an Electrical panel manufacturing industry. Here they are using CRCA sheets for building panel shells. While referring to properties about crca and hr sheets I found that tensile strength for CRCA and HR sheets are 280 and 290 MPA respectively. It states that HR sheets possess better resistance to breaking than CRCA. But still technically I couldn't understand why they are using CRCA Sheets for panel manufacturing. Could you please help me out?

A. Hi. Lokeswaran. Hot rolled sheets are, as their name implies, rolled while still red hot. The result is oxidation, mill scale, and roughness on the surface. While this is a good enough surface for some applications like structural steel shapes, most people do not consider the surface smooth enough, clean enough, accurate enough, and attractive enough for panel building. Good luck.

Q. Hi,
I want to know the magnetic property of HR, mild steel, CRCA. Which would be better to use for machine designing as rotor construction. I want to use plates of that material, so please anyone, tell me which material to use.

What happens if CRCA is too hard?
Q. Sir
Please tell me if CRCA material hardness increases beyond the limit what are its demerits?
self - ludhiana, Punjab, India
January 15, 2015
A. Hi cousin Manish. Please tell me who imposed the hardness limit and WHY, and then we can tell you the demerits of exceeding it. Seriously, your question is impossible to answer. No one knows if this part is rubbing against another hardened part and will damage it, or if it needs flexibility which will be lost, or if it is a structural member in tension at risk of sudden failure, etc. Good luck.

Q. I work for a automotive R&D as electrical motor designer. We design DC motors or get it designed by suppliers. We are using CRNGO sheets for lamination of armature for almost all motors. Now we are working on cost reduction proposal to change lamination material to CRCA.
Please help me know applications of CRCA and CRNGO material.
Specifically when can we switch to CRCA from CRNGO?
For motors < 100W which lamination is preferred (i.e., CRCA or CRNGO)?
For motors < 500W which lamination is preferred (i.e., CRCA or CRNGO)?
For motors < 1000W which lamination is preferred (i.e., CRCA or CRNGO)?

Q. Dear Sir,
As an assessor of pressure equipment, visiting one of my clients in India, they have used CRCA as per IS513 to make fire extinguishers. the requirement is for -30 °C. I cannot find an equivalent material to EN standards. What can I consider to compare this material? I cannot find any properties to direct me to accept this material for this temperature. Looking forward to your comments.

Ed. note: Sometimes a particular thread spirals down from our usual good interactive dialogs of people helping people, into an expectation that this is some sort of free consulting service where readers need contribute no help to others. The tail end of this thread now consists simply of dozens of brief questions, sometimes in sentence fragments. Please consider this thread closed to additional questions (they will be discarded) until answers start coming in to reduce the number of unanswered queries instead of increasing it :-)
Thanks for your understanding that a long list of unanswered questions helps nobody but just chases readers away. Thanks!
! Hi there,
I went through the thread and found it interesting that all the people asking questions were from India and although you kept asking them to send the questions with some context in them, no one really did. Also you answered so many of the questions yet I found not even one person thanking you. I being a fellow Indian (now a Canadian Citizen) would like to thank you very much for taking the time out to answer the questions for all of us seeking to find answers.
Best regards

Hi cousin Vikas. It's very kind of you to write! ... but I have one of the world's best jobs: from the comfort of home I run my own forum, looking into whatever subjects I want whenever I want ... and I get paid in advertising revenue for such easy work :-)
It causes me no personal pain when readers stop helping each other and a particular thread deteriorates into a long string of unanswered questions like this one did :-)
... but there's no point in posting endless lists of unanswered questions -- it wastes my time, it wastes our readers' time, it wastes the poster's time, and it only spoils the overall forum. So, for now, only answers will be posted on this subject; the forum is closed to new questions on the subject of CRCA for now, whether submitted here or as a new thread. We'll resume posting questions only if & when some answers have been posted so we're not just being silly :-)
Thanks again for your kindness!
