How is graining and anodizing of aluminum litho plates done?

Q. We have a coating unit to manufacture aluminum presensitized printing plates. We import the grained, anodized and post-treated aluminum sheets and then coat them in our plant. We now intend to set up a coil line comprising of graining, anodizing and post-treatment. We'd like to know graining and anodizing for litho plates are done, particularly the materials to be used, the equipment required, etc. We would appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Thanks and regards.

A. Having been involved in this type of activity a number of years ago I can give you a few general pointers.

1.) Graining can be accomplished several ways, mechanically by brushing or use of abrasives, or chemically.

2.) Anodizing, can be coil or sheet, will depend on your current coating equipment. Anodic coating thickness may have an effect on subsequent presensitized coating adhesion to the plate and wear factors.

3.) Sealing (or not sealing) is going to be a very important factor with respect to presensitized coating adhesion, and how well non image areas remain hydrophillic (carry water or "fountain solution") while running on a press.
