How do I start in finishing wheels

I need to know how do I get wheel blanks for turning rims and is it possible to chrome non-metallic parts? Does aluminum polishing have the same quality as chrome dipping? What do I need to chrome dip?

Yes,Jay, it is possible to chrome plate non-metallic parts; moreover, when you say "chrome" you may be intending to allow other technologies that impart a shiny metallic look but which may not necessarily be restricted strictly to the electrodeposition of chromium.

Polished aluminum is shiny but has a whitish, lighter color compared to the bluish, darker color of chrome plating; further, it doesn't offer the abrasion resistance of chrome. Although hobbyists do some kinds of plating, chrome plating is not a good hobby because it involves toxic, carcinogenic, chromic acid--and multi million dollar cleanups have sometimes been required for garage-based chrome plating shops.

Please review our "Introduction to Chrome Plating", then get a copy of the Metal Finishing Guidebook, flip through it cover to cover, and you'll have ammunition to think really seriously about your questions. Good luck!

Well chrome is the way that I want to go because you were right about it being more durable and shines way better than just polishing. I want to chrome out the whole bike. I think it would make it very unique for Hawaii. Any direction you can give me on training I would appreciate it.

I think what we're not communicating on here is the fact that chrome plating is not very doable by an individual; it would require a large investment, environmental permits, etc. You should find a plating shop that does chrome plating and have them chrome plate the parts for you. Good luck.
