Stress of electroforming

How to control stress in electroformed metals?

Mao Zhensheng
[a compact disc company] - Wuxi Jiangsu, P.R.C

Trade secrets in your industry. For some help, get some seminar papers on the subject from AESF. They have a link on the main page.

James Watts
- Navarre, Florida

Berl Stein has a paper on line here on the subject at www.finishing.com/php/nicoformclick.php?cstu=4433. There have been a few research articles printed about the "magic" stress reducing compound you can generate in sulphamate nickel plating by using two tanks piped together, one with sulfurized anodes and one sulfur-free anodes. Either a computerized lit search or the link that James Watts gave you should get you to it. There are also a few devices on the market which attempt to measure the stress and adjust it to zero (or the desired value) by altering the current density.

What type of metal are you electroforming? Following parameters may help to control.

1. Temperature
2. Current Density
3. pH
4. Amount of brightener
5. Chloride concentration
6. Surface of substrate

1.Please check mounting plate assembly, it should not be overtight to cause stress.
2.Magnetic spacer plates also sometimes cause stress.
3.Carry out the carbon treatment, it also helps.

I hope that you will find the above points useful.
