Ed. note: before the internet existed, there was a time when "Sysops" (system operators) ran publics forums via dial-up modems and "BBS" (Bulletin Board System) software. Here is one such discussion from 1994.

- Small Area Gloss Measurements We are finishing small parts that have a stringent gloss requirement. For a variety of reasons, we would like to measure the gloss of the final part, rather than of a witness panel. (Someone asked a question of Roobol in Paint & Powder about painting buttons, and his suggestion was testing a witness panel.) Does anyone make a gloss meter that measures an area of less than 1/8" x 1/8"? The smallest area commercial units I've seen have a spot size of 6 x 12 mm (1/4" x 1/2"). I can't see any technical difficulties in building a small area gloss meter, and, obviously, I'm not alone in having a need for one, but I'd certainly rather buy one than build one.
