Plating Fiberoptic glass fibers
Greetings fellow Tank Jockeys:
I would like to metallize for solder adhesion the final 8 mm of glass(Si02)fibres used in fiberoptic systems. I would like to do it without etching if at all possible. Any ideas?

Most metallizing of fiber optics is done by physical vapor deposition methods. Usually the fibers are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] or acetone ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] Warning! highly Flammable! before putting them in the vacuum system but no etching is done.
