Nikisil Plating Inquiry

2001

Is Nikisil plating only for aluminium or can you coat any other metals? Does it make the surface harder and can it be used to reduce or eliminate the tiny imperfections on sleeves so that the engine will use less oil? Finally, what are the benefits and risks (if any) of Nikisil plating sleeves, etc?

I realise that these questions show my complete lack of knowledge on the subject, but I am very new to this process and would appreciate a response.

Dear J. Hill,

Nikasil works very well when applied over cast iron sleeves. It will definitely make the surface harder. Scratches of .02 to .15mm or so will be eliminated, because the cylinder is first honed oversize to allow for proper plating thickness.
