Importance of Hard Gold in Plating PWBs

What is the difference between "hard" gold and regular gold when dealing with plating printed circuit boards?

Hard gold is harder and more wear resistant, so you are less likely to wear through it and expose the nickel on surfaces like edge contacts. Ted Mooney, finishing.com
