Rust blue is a process of applying a solution to clean gun metal and then allowing it to rust. The rust is rubbed off with #0000 steel wool this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] leaving a light blue color this is repeated until a good color is achieved. Any where form 4 to 10 times it is a long process but the most durable and attractive finish possible. The chemical used can be purchased commercially or made up from different formulas. The early gunsmiths used nitric acid and hydrochloric acid mix and then dissolved iron filings in it. This was brushed on then allowed to rust. I'm not sure of the percentages of acid.
