Unusual behaviour of thief wire in chrome plating

Q. Hello everybody, I've noticed an unusual behavior of the wire thief on the rack. I don't use it very often, but sometimes the wire appears to be significantly thicker in one part, then it becomes thin and corroded, and then thick again. Occasionally, the thin part of the wire breaks because it's too thin. This has never happened before. Normally, the wire should grow and become thicker. I have also noticed that in this case, the wire is unable to properly protect the items.

Why can something like this happen? How can I fix it?
