"Living locket" -- any info available? Lock of hair keepsake

Q. I was given a locket that resembles a pocket watch but when you open it there is only two pieces of glass that have space between them approximately 3/4 of an inch. It opens on both sides and you can see right through it when both hinged sides are open. It's gold in color and from what I can tell it is gold. It's engraved in detail around the outer circle and has letters I. The center of one side is rather small and the center of the other side has a shield with no letters. The gentleman who gave me this stated there was a locket of hair in it which he removed before giving me the item. I have looked all over the internet with only finding one similar that came from civil war time period. I would love for anyone to help me with any information that can be given on this.

A. Hello Tonya,
Sorry it took a week to get back to you. My Grandmother had a piece like this that was passed down to my sister. Given the detail of the piece and how the finish has endured the years, I would say you have gold there. As far as the time period, an old school jeweler could answer that question and guarantee the karat of the gold.
