Sintered Iron Part - Gas Nitriding Unsuccessful
January 5, 2020
Q. Hello, we are sintered iron parts manufacturing company.
Currently we are trying to Nitride a part aiming to make it corrosion resistant.
About part:
Sintered iron copper(1.5%) carbon(0.6%) part
Sintered 30mins at 1110 C
Density: 6.8-7.0 gm/cm3
We tried gas nitriding the part in ammonia
⇦ this on
eBay or
Amazon [affil links] with cycle time of 12 hours.
Result was a very brittle part. Corrosion resistance was achieved but at cost of strength.
Any insight towards how to maintain the core strength while getting corrosion resistance is much appreciated.
Thank you

A. It is usually possible to electroplate zinc after impregnation with resin. Here in the USA articles are often mechanically plated with zinc; a process that does not require impregnation.
