Uncoated carbon steel and 96-hour salt spray test

October 25, 2019

Q. Which carbon steel without any coating can withstand 96 Hrs Salt spray test as per ASTM B117

A. Hi Manikanda. Uncoated carbon steel cannot survive a salt spray test.

However, there may be a "semantics" issue. Carbon steel is the major component in most stainless steels, but they contain other ingredients like chrome, nickel, and molybdenum and they are not called "carbon steel"; that term is reserved for steels without those ingredients.
