Is it possible to gas carburize mild steel?

Q. Hi,
We are a workshop making excavators gears and pinions. We heat treat them with traditional carburizing (pack carburizing). We use mild steel to make these gears and pinions. Is it possible to gas carburize these parts having them fabricated using mild steel? Or conventional carburizing is the only method for mild steel. Please help.

A. Yes, of course gas carburizing can be used to replace pack carburizing in every case. And you will probably get more uniform results.
