ICP-MS tests for RoHS show Cadmium in Tin Plated Parts

June 15, 2015

My customer says some of my parts have cadmium plating. It is forbidden per RoHS. It is supposed to have tin plating. Lab tests using ICP-MS indicate they do have cadmium but my plater says he has never done cadmium plating and he doesn't even have the right process to cadmium plate (requires cyanide, etc.). These parts were originally Zinc plated and my plater was supposed to remove the zinc and re-plate with tin. Could this extra stripping and re-plating cause false results with the ICP-MS tests?
