Need alternative to ERW pipe for luggage trolleys

September 22, 2014

Q. What are the processes apart from the ERW by which CRCA pipe of the below said outside size can be manufactured in the close tolerance of +/ - 0.05 MM, and should have smooth surface finish. As the CRCA pipe will be used in the trolley for luggage, and one pipe will have reciprocating movement in another.

A. Hi Sanjay. Pipe can be hot formed and heat welded rather than cold formed and ERW (electric resistance welded). Google "alternative to ERW".

But actually, I suspect that the issue here is that small, thin walled tubing is not usually simply hot or cold formed from coil. Rather, after you have your ERW pipe or heat-welded pipe and have annealed it, it is cold drawn to a smaller size and thinner wall. So I think you are looking for cold drawn seamless tubing.

Naturally, depending on the loading and the frequency of telescoping, different surface finishes may be required. Nickel chrome plating is probably okay for a luggage trolley; other finishes may be okay as well.
