Sculptor Needs Help with Mirror Polished Welds

February 16, 2014

Q. I am issues with a sculpture I am making. I have a faceted stainless steel Type 316 12 GA TIG welded sculpture. Most of the angles for the facets are acute (around 90 degrees) some are obtuse (around 180 degrees but never 180) the obtuse welds have slight openings and it was welded with 030 filler (type 316). So as you can see there is a clear line at the weld seam.

On the acute angles it is not as noticeable because the corner hides the condition. I would like it to be not there, but it could be something that I have no choice but to live with. I have cut the seam open and re welded the seam. Still shows up. I have finished one sculpture and had no issues with that in the obtuse angle facets. This picture is probably the "flattest" of this condition. Is there anything I can do or not considering to help alleviate this situation? The only thing I have not tried is cutting one of these facets out and welding a new piece. PLease share anything I should consider. Thanks.
