Hot dip galvanizing over electroplated steel?

October 15, 2013

Q. CAN I HOT DIP GALVANIZE AN ELECTRO PLATED ITEM SUCH AS A TUBE WITHOUT STRIPPING IT FIRST?

ALFRED HASELBECK
- GAUTENG, South Africa

A. Hi Alfred. That's an almost unqualified "No."

The galvanizing must react directly with the base steel. But if the previous plating is zinc, you might find a galvanizing shop willing to just run the parts through the line, which will strip the old zinc -- but most will probably not want to contaminate their process tanks with your old plating.
