Tiny holes in welded areas of acid copper plating

July 31, 2013

Q. Dear sirs,

I'm Harsha from Srilanka, we have a problem in acid copper plating that is small holes like patches can be seen in welded areas (joints) in acid copper plated articles,

it's just in that areas , can someone tell me how to avoid it?

thanks & regards,
Harsha

A. Hi Harsha. Presumably you are not welding together steel parts that were copper plated, but rather you are copper plating parts that were previously welded together.

You can't reliably electroplate acid copper directly onto steel ... is that what you are trying to do? You must do pyrophosphate copper plating, cyanide copper plating, or nickel plating first. Good luck.

A. Sounds like pits in the weld that might be smeared over and the processing is opening up the pit.

Q. We initially do the cyanide copper plating, then the acid copper plating, these holes can be seen in welded areas only.

no plating in weld area 1  no plating in weld area 2

Harsha
