Coated steel vs. stainless steel for saline solar heating system
July 25, 2013
Q. Please suggest whether crc with sand blast & polymer coating or ss tank is favourable for storage of saline hot water tank in a solar water heating system.

A. Hi Puneet. --
Sand blasting is not proper pretreatment unless when you speak of polymer coating, you mean a multistep process involving a primer, binder, or pretreatment step before the polymer. "Polymer" is pretty broad, but you are probably thinking of, and probably need, a heavy thermoplastic coating. Plastisol coatings are fully resistant, but limited to about 150-160 °F.
Although there are stainless steels that are resistant to salt water, the common and affordable grades may not be. 316L, or 316L with titanium additive is probably the minimum acceptable grade if we assume the tank must be welded. Good luck.
