Nickel Plating Carbon Steel for Furnace

February 14, 2013

Q. Is nickel plated carbon steel suitable for use as a test load in a 650C (1200F) heat treating furnace? The atmosphere is Argon gas. The purpose of the nickel plating on the large steel test load plates is to prevent oxidation before and during the heat treat cycle. The oxidation could contaminate when it heats up from room temperature to 650C. The furnace is also used as a vacuum furnace later, so purity is important.

We plan to manufacture our test load using 50 tons of nickel plated carbon steel plate. Stainless steel would be an option, but is very expensive.
