Ultrasonic cleaning prior to hot dip galvanizing
November 30, 2012
Q. Dear All,
We are trying to develop ultrasonic cleaning system to clean nails / fasteners (mild steel wire) prior to hot dip galvanizing. We would like to do this without alkali degreasing or acid pickling.
What are the chances of getting a good finish product without surface imperfections?
What type of aqueous solutions to be used ?
Please suggest

A. Hi Murali. Close to zero in my estimation, but I'd like to hear from others.

For hot dip galvanizing -- an alloying reaction not a coating system -- you need chemically clean steel.
Ultrasonic cleaning might clean grease, oil, dirt, but will it remove millscale and rust, to leave chemically clean steel?
I don't think so.
