Comparison of stainless steel sheet to GI sheet for industrial roofing purpose
October 28, 2012
Q. Please send the comparison of stainless steel sheet to GI sheet for Industrial roofing purpose.
1- mechanical life
2- cost
3- other advantages, etc.
- Nagpur, India
A. Dear Mr Vishal,
SS is basically steel alloyed with nickel to make it brighter and less quicker to rust by etching away the steel part from the surface, leaving nickel alone to give it an appearance of a rust free material. For roofing it cannot be used as it will ultimately also rust.
The zinc coated steel is a protective coating in the sense that it sacrifices itself without allowing the base metal steel to rust. Galvanized sheets further have a thick Zinc Carbonate coating on the zinc that retards the zinc from corroding for a longer period.
Your questions as below:
1- mechanical life : almost the same.
2- cost : Maybe four to five times depending on the grade os SS selected.
3- other advantages, etc. : None whatsoever / Using SS is not an advantage.
