Why does stainless steel pipe need a blasted finish?

Q. Dear friends,

Currently we are getting 316/316L stainless steel 40''pipes for fabrication of gas flow lines. Internal and external surface of the pipes are blasted by the manufacturer. I just want to know what is the purpose of the blasting: surface preparation for further coating applications after final installation which may take months to complete, or mechanical treatment for the metal itself?

Thanks,
Mekhman

A. As far as I know, there is no technical reason to blast SS pipes other than to produce a uniform finish. If you are buying from different sources this will make them all look the same.
