Finishing plain steel for a coffee table

Hi everyone, I recently have entered the metal fabrication hobby and I am currently making a coffee table. I am using plain steel tubing, 1''x 1''. I do not want to paint to give it a flat glossy look, but I am looking for ways I can give it a nice finish. More of a dark color. I have researched patinas with special solutions but they look more of a gimmick than a solution. Thanks!

Hi, John.

There are tintable lacquers available from sources such as G.J. Nikolas [a finishing.com supporting advertiser]. I think a dark or smoky tint in a clear coat lacquer might give the look you want.
