How to improve surface roughness in shot blasting structural steel





My name is G.THULASIRAMAN from india.
I am a mechanical engineer working in a structural fabrication company.We have shot blasting machine in which we get plates cleaned but without surface roughness.I want suggestions.

Hi, Thulasiraman.

When you ask to "improve" surface roughness, I'm not sure if you are trying to achieve a rougher surface (for example, for better paint adhesion), or if you are trying to reduce the surface roughness. But I don't think you can shot blast your way to a polished surface.

I agree with Ted's interpretation. If you want a rougher surface profile, you need to use a crystal type media such as garnet. Maybe alum. oxide might do the job as well; however, it creates other problems for operations after blasting
