Deterioration in water channels of molds
September 15, 2011
We are having problems with our inserts in injection moulds.
We are running treated water.
Over the last year we have seen an increase in the amount of corrosion taking place.
Most of our steel is stainless mould steel from well known international mills.
We also use non stainless grade for structural reasons.
We presently have extreme pitting in the water channels after only one week running.
Any ideas?

When you say treated water, it really does not mean anything except to you.
At mold temperatures items like dissolved chlorine are very corrosive to even good SS.
Consider going to RO water (reverse osmosis) . It will take most of the materials out of the water and is less expensive that DI water. Cool it and recycle it thru the RO for less water cost.

Water is treated mostly to prevent calcium and other salt deposits, as well as algae, that clog lines or produce nasty odors. Unfortunately, some types of treatments rely on very low pH values. Consult with local suppliers of treatment chemicals for the best treatment for you.
