Blackness persists in weld area after electropolishing

September 1, 2011

Dear sir,
I'm in pharma machinery manufacturing field.
We are using SS 316 L material.

My Problem :
We are using TIG welding for welding SS 316 L to SS 316 L with SS 316 L filler wire.
After welding we are finishing that weld joint with help of SS wire wheel.
Afterwards we do whole job for Electropolish.
After electropolish in some weld joint, there is blackening happening.

Dear Mr. Prashant Patil,

This is a carbon trapped in the welding probably due to poor welding practices. We usually ask our customers to mechanically clean and smooth the welding area with a sander or flap wheel for a better electro-polishing results.
