Max. Operational Temperature of Nickel Plating
One source stated nickel has a max. service temperature of ~400 C. Since nickel based alloys perform well in temperature in excess of 1000 C, I am hoping nickel can do lot better than 400 C. I am considering using nickel as a coating for SS 304 parts for an apparatus that will be heated up to 800 C.

Hi, Kyle.
Most molds for continuous casting of steel are nickel plated. The mold is made of copper, with cooling water running through it, and the hot steel is probably well above 800° C, so no doubt the nickel can survive this exposure. But the surface of the nickel may be under 800° C, despite the hot steel. Adhesion on stainless steel can be problematic, and the nickel plating must be free of organic brighteners (which drastically embrittle the nickel), but I'd say it's probably doable.
Tell us more about the component and the exposure; you may be better off with a solid nickel electroform than a nickel plated stainless steel comonent. Good luck.
