DYED CHEMICAL FILM COATINGS
NAS43(National Aerospace Standards-Spacer, Sleeve) lists as a possible call-out for an aluminum spacer "chemical film per Mil-C-5541, Class 1A, Dyed blue". The "dyed blue" has me confused. I never knew that chem film coatings could be dyed blue (or for that matter, any color), does anyone have experience with dyed chem film coatings? I am now being told that if a chem film coating is dyed the color will come off very easily. Does anyone know if this is accurate?
Thanks for any help!

Yes, chromate coatings on aluminum, zinc and cadmium, may be dyed. The colors are not always pretty, but are good enough for color coding parts. Several chromate suppliers furnish printed advice on their favorite parameters, but experience has shown, the best way is to let the supplier have some sample parts to develop a process in his lab.

Hi, Bill. "Not always pretty" but always pastel rather than highly saturated.
