Varnish Layers on Wooden Tables are Too Soft
We are seeking a solution to a dilemma of indentation on our production of "lacquered tables".
Our substrate is MDF that has been sealed with latex sealer "aqua lock", heavy paper printed with acrylic inks is mounted with wall paper adhesives.
The coatings are- water soluble acrylic applied as paper sealer (two coats sprayed) to maintain bright white paper (prevent wetting), eighteen layers of automotive acrylic polyurethane applied two coats per day, sanded between dry coats, blocked and polished at the end for a distortion free, mirror glossy clear.
The problem is that it indents too easily, even after months of being dry, with a firm pressing of the thumbnail. We have tried epoxy, it resists the indentation, but we are fearful of yellowing. We cannot disguise the yellowing because of the white paper. Unfortunately the only aspect of production which can be altered is the coating.
Ideally we are seeking a professional to consult with, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like the 'heavy paper' is still pliable. Either the wall paper adhesive or the following two coats of sealer are not imparting any stiffness to the paper.
Try a another paper adhesive (acrylic clear emulsion) and/or a sealer with more wetting properties that enables more penetration of the sealer into the paper.
