Corrosion of Cadmium Plated MIL-spec connectors in storage
We have units with connectors protruding through the cabinet. At the time of final assembly we install a dust cover over the end. The cover does not cover all of the threads. We pulled the units from climate controlled storage and found that the exposed threads seem to be corroded. Time frame of storage 2 months. What do you think caused this?

(1) It is very difficult to clean the cutting/threading oil out of the deep part of the threads, therefore, it is a common problem to get reliable plating coverage into the bottom of the thread. (2) On the knife edge of the top of the thread, where the cadmium coats on both sides (and builds beyond the knife edge), the plating and the edge of the thread are brittle and crack off, exposing the site for corrosion.
