Temporary Corrosion Protection for Steel & Ductile Iron Castings

We buy flow indicators from a US manufacturer with steel and ductile iron cast bodies. Many of these flow indicators, in their finished product form, arrive with considerable surface corrosion on the body casing which makes the product look aesthetically poor even though, functionally, it is fine. Is there any means to protect steel and ductile iron castings from corrosion immediately after the casting process, while in storage and through machining?

Bill,
I don't get involved in carbon steel and iron usually, but I know there are products out there on the market for temporary corrosion protection. Typically these are some sort of oil-based coating.

Hi Bill,

Ray has you going in the right direction. A good start would be to find a material released against MIL-C-16173. Grade 3 is probably the best material for your requirements. This offers temporary corrosion protection and water displacement as well.
