Suitability of electrogalvanized materials for 40°C ambient temperature

June 16, 2011

Dear Sirs;

What is the probability of electrogalvanized to be corroded in ambient temperature (max. 40° C). How fast to be corroded and what is the life cycle expectation to be last.

Furthermore, if it is ideal substitute electrogalvanized in lieu of Hot dip galvanized.

Hi, Lodivico.

Electrogalvanized (zinc electroplated) coatings are generally much thinner than hot dipped coatings. The life expectancy of zinc-coated steel is almost directly proportional to the thickness of the zinc, so if you use a much thinner coating you will get a much shorter life expectancy.

If you can tell us what kind of object you are working with, and what thickness of zinc you will be applying, maybe someone can offer a rough life-expectancy. My own experience is that most zinc electroplated fasteners are not suitable for exterior exposure except in a dry, non-salty, climate.
