Nickel-Chrome plating vs. Hot Dip Galvanizing for data center item

April 14, 2011

We manufacture a product (Pedestal Head for Data Center Floor) that utilizes a Nickel-Chrome finish versus using a standard Hot Dip Galvanize. The initial purpose is to eliminate any zinc in the process, but also to have hard coating that is appropriate for the threaded rod and screw portion of the product. Galvanize can be too thick and impede the threads and easily wear on the threaded rod.

A customer is looking for a "technical" paper on our contention that the Nickel-Chrome finish would be superior to the HDG (not a particularly thick application).

Can anyone point me in a direction?

Hi, Robert.

Corrosion of either in a data center is going to be a non-issue. Zinc whiskers are a major problem for data centers, but I believe that that problem only applies to electroplated zinc, not hot-dip galvanized. Although the threads can be an issue, that is addressed via dimensioning them differently; threaded hot-dip galvanized fasteners are widely used.

In other words, I don't think you'll find any such paper advocating one over the other. Nickel-chrome plating is prettier.
