Material finish required for a solenoid can?
March 8, 2011
We are quoting a program with the material 11SMnPb30 specified with the following finish.
German to English translation:
modeled DIN 50962 Fe / Zn Ni (12) 4 +4 / / A
Thick layer passivated Cr-6 free
Resistance according to DIN EN ISO 9227:
48h NSS without Fe corrosion
drum-coated
The material is equal to AISI 12L15 with this finish. We use 12L14 a lot and I don't know what the difference is to 12L15. Is there a US finish specification equal to this German spec?
Thank you in advance for any help with this!

ASTM B841 is the equivalent North American standard to DIN 50962. 12L14 is a suitable alternative to the European steel grade, as the compositions overlap significantly, and it will be far more readily available than 12L15.
