Electropolished vs. mass finished stainless steel

I want to change from electropolish of stainless steel 316L bars to Mass finishing (3 stage -ceramic, plastic, corn).I have already proved I can get the required bright polish finish.
Are there are metallurgical concerns I should take into account or anything else which should deter me from changing?

Hi, Alan. Things to consider include the fact that electropolishing is a very competent passivation method, whereas your mass finished bars will not be passivated. Plus, electropolishing leaves a smooth surface like ocean swells because the asperities are dissolved away, whereas mechanical finishing of any variety leaves a plowed field effect.

This does not mean that you shouldn't make the switch, but it does mean that serious testing is required first. Good luck.
