Shot peening required before replating?
February 2, 2011
OEM book repair calls for shotpeening of base metal prior to chrome plating. We have a few cases of faulty chrome and need to strip and replate the part. Do you need to re-shotpeen the part prior to replate? Is the residual compression stress of initial shotpeening sufficient enough to not re-shotpeen the part? What are the effects of chrome plating, hydrogen embrittlement stress relieving and chrome strip on the peened substrate?
