How to make a silver ring age (blacken)
Q. Any suggestions on how to "age" my latest creation?
Would like it to appear old, i.e., pitted, corroded, etc., like it's been buried for a long time - perhaps found in an recovered pirate ship.

A. Hi, Chuck. You call it a silver ring, so I assume it's not just silvery colored, but is cast from rather pure silver? You already have some good roughness to it that might look like pitting and corrosion if it wasn't so bright, so maybe a sulfide treatment will do? Put it in a plastic baggie overnight with a crushed hard boiled egg (this tip courtesy of James Watts), and see how that does. If it's not enough, you ought to be able to get it as black as you wish with liver of sulfur. Good luck!
