Appearance of A36 that has been zinc-nickel alloy plated

January 3, 2011

Hi,

Working with a new combination of alloy and material. Can someone please tell me what A36 plated with zinc-nickel alloy would look like? I have a piece and it looks more like a black oxide than what I expected.

All help appreciated.

Kathy

Hi, Kathy.

Obviously it won't be possible to positively identify zinc-nickel plating just from its appearance, but the zinc nickel that I have seen has all looked a lot like zinc plating except that the chromate (probably because it's thinner and has a greater tendency to form diffraction patterns) looks like a funky iridescent yellow that has way too much red and purple in it :-)

It may be possible to black chromate a zinc nickel plating, but that is not within my limited experience.

Zinc Nickel with a black passivation looks exactly like a black oxide! Its a good description.

Maybe the term nickel lead you to believe that it would be bright and shiny - but its quite the opposite.
